Home Tours Hawaii

flower_bullet What's it like to live in paradise?

Find out in the homes of three Big Island residents and enjoy a delicious brunch prepared by a top island chef with Home Tours Hawai'i. The new, one-of-a-kind visitor activity features the culinary genius of Executive Chef Ann Sutherland and is the brainchild of business partner Pat Peterson

"At Home Tours Hawai'i, we offer an intimate taste of the Big Island while taking travelers past the hotels and restaurants," explains Chef Sutherland.

. "I got acquainted with the concept of home tours while traveling in Beijing, Italy and Finland," recalls Peterson. "It's always fun to see how people live in exotic places."

A seasoned traveler, Chef Sutherland has traveled throughout the world, tasting the cuisines of numerous countries. She hails from the North Shore of O'ahu, where she learned to appreciate luscious tropical fruits, the bounty from the sea and taro-the staff of life for Hawaiians. "When I was 16, my mother sent me to France, to study language, art and cooking," recalls Chef Sutherland. "The food encouraged a passion for garlic, bacon, mushrooms and red wine."

Chef Sutherland's interesting culinary past includes studies at the Culinary Institute in New York and serving as Ethel Kennedy's chef in both Virginia and Hyannisport. Other jobs took her to the Virgin Islands and the Midwest before coming to the Big Island. In 1991, she opened Mean Cuisine in Waimea and featured the first "ready-made" gourmet dinners for microwave and an extensive variety of breads and pastry. She most recently was executive chef at the Regency at Hualalai in Kailua-Kona where she oversaw the preparation of "as many as 25 types of entrees a day."
